My Basketball Pool

Well, to all those who follow College Basketball (which should actually be no one that reads my blog if I count correctly) UCLA just got trounced by the florida gators in the NCAA championship game last night. The sad part is that UCLA was one of the teams that I picked out of a hat for our little teacher pool, so I ended up winning my 50,000 pesos back (sounds like a lot but it's really more like $25). Well, the excitement and yummy wraps that we had at the team picking party were probably worth more than $25 anyway.

Emily is still down here and we are starting to get primed for our trip into the jungle. I'll remind everyone not to look up "Ciudad Perdid" on the internet because you're likely to get a story from a few years ago about how some people were kidnapped. Don't worry, it is VERY safe right now so I'll be fine. My biggest danger will be a mean case of giardia.

Em has already grown bored with the birds found in the city as she knows all their names and is trying to help me memorize them now. Last night I was able to identify a "Scarlet Fly Catcher" as a "Reddish Bug Eater" so I'm getting better.

I'm in the midst of parent teacher interviews today and tomorrow. Unlike what most of us probably remember from our own or our children's school experiences, almost ALL of the parents come and the kids come with them. That makes for about 85 conferences over two days. Valuable and a nice change of pace but not a lot of fun.

I'm just starting the chemisrty unit with my students and I've already come up with a bunch of fun demos to do with them. I actually think it's more fun for me. The first one that I did was turning water into wine into milk into beer! A big hit. This also racks up one more blasphemous thing on top of the Jesus-Bib (which, by the way, I dissapointed about. Only one comment on that picture).

I just found out today that one of my university buddies, Jeff Fleming, is working in geology stuff down in Mexico and so we shared some 'playing basketball in South America' anecdotes. I suppose Mexico isn't in south america but it's close enough that they play basketball the exact same way.

If I don't post before the week off (April 8th-15th) I'll try to make sure to put up some pics of the week long jungle hike when I get back.
